SOAS Nordic Society began two years ago with the aim of promoting and sharing Nordic culture and has since then grown and gathered an ever increasing number of Nordic and non-Nordic students curious to learn about Nordic culture at SOAS, University of London. Our activities consist mainly of social events including film-screenings, bar nights and baking days. This term we have arranged a welcoming feast at the Nordic Bar, a session of Swedish exercise (Friskis&Svettis) and will continue our activities with Lucia celebrations, ice-skating sessions and much more. The largest event that was organized the previous year was a winter dinner held at the Finnish Church in Canada Water where Swedish and Finnish food and drinks were served together with a lot of singing. For this event SOAS Nordic Society won the award for arranging the ‘Most Original Event 2009/2010’ at SOAS where we have nearly 100 active societies!

This year our plan is to aim even higher. One of the main tasks we have this year is to arrange an event in a lecture hall with a capacity of 290 people in February. The theme is ‘How should peace be created and maintained today? What is the role of the European parliament in this process? Does it have one?’ Ideas that we have are to invite the former President of Finland and the Nobel Peace Prize winner Martti Ahtisaari to hold a lecture on approaches to peace-making today. We also have intentions of inviting Swedish ministers who have experienced the Swedish half year in chair of the European parliament to discuss what the institution has done and what it should do in the future. With this we want bring a discussion concerned with the link the Nordic countries, as a part of Europe has with the Orient and Africa, the particular focus of studies at our university.
